The Scoop – New Zealand Natural

Manuka honey ice-cream

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

New Zealand Natural has released a new flavour of ice cream, incorporating the uniquely New Zealand flavours of Manuka honey & golden kiwi fruit.

However, that’s not the real scoop.

The “scoop” is the free scoop of Manuka Honey & Golden Kiwi Fruit ice cream with the purchase of a two scoop, regular ice cream.

That’s right! A free scoop of ice cream! It’s not one scoop, or even two scoops but three scoops of New Zealand Natural ice cream for the price of two! What an offer! Our friendly staff are standing by to take your order, so call (in) now to receive your free scoop, today!

Ok, so it’s not “free” free, but three for the price of two ain’t all that bad.

So what’s all the infomercialesque fuss over the new flavour and free scoop promo about? Well…

A number of food bloggers, along with myself were given the opportunity to try out the new flavour first hand at one of their city branches, though this offer is available at their other stores too. As New Zealand Natural was my first foray into, and likewise first love for, premium ice cream, I was curious to see what I was in store for.

Incidentally, for those that care to know, Hokey Pokey was, and occasionally still is, my favoured mistress.

The taste of the Manuka honey comes through as a base flavour throughout ice cream itself and not in swirls like I was hoping for. Like an out-of-luck gold prospector seeking rich deposits of gold buried beneath the surface, I dug with futility for golden veins of pure Manuka honey that just weren’t there.

However, if nuggets of golden kiwi fruit are more to your liking, then eurika!

We, as in the food bloggers, all found that the overall flavour of the ice cream, the elements of Manuka honey and golden kiwi fruit combined, tasted somewhat reminiscent of mango ice cream. Though a little overly sweet for my palate, the ice cream reminded me of why New Zealand Natural was my first love.

So, those of you that like the flavours of Manuka honey and/or golden kiwi fruit, are curious of what they taste like, or just like the idea of getting 1/3 more ice cream at no additional cost, give it a go and find out what it’s like for yourself. However, the free scoop promotion is meant to run only until the end of February. Though the offer may be extended, it’s probably best to get in sooner rather than later.

But wait, there’s more!

To finish off this post, and for the sake of disclosure, we were given a 9L container of the Manuka honey & golden kiwi fruit ice cream to take home; the journey to bring the ice cream home was something of a trial. An embarrassing & costly story that I will save the telling of for, well, never.

Now, 9L is a lot of ice cream. You know those large tubs of ice cream in the display cabinet at the store? Well, at full capacity, that’s 9L of ice cream. Actually, that’s what they gave us to take home. I’ve given a ton of it away and I still have a lot of ice cream in the freezer!

Given 9L of ice cream, if you were in my place (or at my place for that matter) what would you do or make with all that ice cream?

uhm… so… this is actually “buy two get one free” after all??
The Manuka honey flavour sounds nice, shame that I’m allergic to Kiwi!

If I was given 9 litres of ice cream I would probably cry (happy tears of course :P) and then I’d make fried icecream balls… mmmmmmm yum.

Hi yas! Ah, yeah. Isn’t that what I’d indicated?

Sorry to hear that you’re alergic to Kiwi!

Hi Kristy Sayer! You know, I thought so to initially. I think I still have 4 or so litre of this ice cream left in the freezer.

Hi Mark! Thanks! I’m sure that freebies will come your way at some stage in the future.

Hi chocolatesuze! No, nor the ongoing embarrassment… :)
