The Essential Ingredient recently held a VIP launch party to celebrate the relocation of their store to Rozelle.

The Essential Ingredient, and stores like it, are something of a candy store for food enthusiasts such as myself. As with a child’s first experience in a candy store, there are a wonderous array of colours, textures and aromas to dazzle the mind and tempt ones appetite. A mental list of things to purchase is compiled with giddy delight, oblivious to the thought that your weekly allowance would likely not cover even a fraction of your heart’s desire.

However, there’s more to the Essential Ingredient store, and the VIP launch party for that matter, than just candy. Read more »

It was a warm Summer’s evening when this whole episode began. A little too warm and a little too Summer for my tastes. I’d received word on the wire from a fixer that I know. A friend. She’d tipped me off to a function at a cocktail bar & lounge that had opened recently on Crown St, Surry Hills. A group of us were invited. Wanted to know if I was interested. The joint was called Tokonoma.

Tokonoma had meant nothing to me at first. My fixer informs me that there was the promise of free food, and more importantly, free drinks. That was all I needed to hear. Like the seductive scent of an exotic femme fatale, suspecting that there would be trouble by the end, I was drawn in like a moth to a raging bonfire. How could a man, down on his luck, refuse such an offer. Read more »

It’s not often that you have the opportunity to meet with a food blogger from another country. So it was with some excitement that I had the pleasure to meet Brad, the photographer/writer behind the award nominated food blog ladyironchef, one of the most popular food blogs in Singapore. With a name like ladyironchef, I was surprised to not see a woman sitting at the table when I arrived at the restaurant.

Considering it was his first time in Sydney, what better way to be introduced to the Sydney food scene than by having a marathon night out with prominent food bloggers from Grab Your Fork, chocolatesuze, A Table for Two, eatshow&tell, Citrus & Candy, & hungry.digital.elf. Read more »

Ate My Way Through Singapore & Vietnam Stack

If you haven’t heard by now, Jen of Sydney food blog JENIUS has gone and done what numerous food bloggers around the world aspire to do. That is to say that she has had her own work published in a book.

However, I’m not talking about having her book published through an established institution. No, no, no. She went ahead and put her own money and cojones (hopefully metaphorically speaking) on the line by having her debut book be self published. Good on her for doing so :)

Inevitably after such a venture, celebrations were in order. What better way to celebrate a book about her travels through Singapore and Vietnam, titled I Ate My Way Through Singapore & Vietnam oddly enough, than by inviting a group of chefs, food bloggers, food & travel editors, foodies, friends and family alike to celebrate the occasion at her book launch party. Japancake Lanterns

The Sydney International Food Festival’s Night Noodle Markets. I was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to attend this year’s event, having read press on the SIFF website selling it as an “authentic Asian hawker market“. I’d never been previously and had heard little about it.

Authentic Asian hawker market. With what seems to be a decent representation of Asians of various nations in the city of Sydney, and with our reasonably close proximity to Asia, this would surely turn out to be one hell of an event, right? Read more »
