Photography Essentials Workshops – October 2011

Just an announcement regarding some upcoming food photography workshops.

There will be some new photography workshops scheduled within the month of October. In response to feedback, the current format of the workshop has been modified to better cater for varying skill levels and experiences.

Please read on to find out more about the new changes and the upcoming workshop dates.

In response to feedback from the attendees of previous photography classes, The Heart of Food Photography workshop will be split off into two separate streams, catering for different skill levels and experience.

These workshops will now be:

  • Photography Essentials – a photography workshop geared towards the novice photographer covering basic photography skills, along with some simple food photography tips.
  • Food Photography Principles – a food photography workshop for the photographer familiar with the basics, the workshop builds on their existing skill set with some more advanced tips and techniques, dealing with real-world issues regarding food photography in available light.

For now, only the Photography Essentials workshops will be available at this stage. scheduled for Saturday October 1st, 8th & 15th. A separate post will announce workshop dates and the material covered in the more advanced Food Photography Principles workshop.

Edit: Unfortunately, due to expected numbers, workshops for the 1st and 8th of October have been cancelled. The workshop for the 15th is still available. Check at the end of the post for details and payment. Sincerest apologies for any inconvenience that these cancellations may have caused.

Participants of the Photography Essentials Workshop will be taught the following:

  • An understanding of exposure (“The Exposure Triangle”)
  • White Balance
  • Focus and depth of field
  • Fundamental rules of composition
  • Basic image processing techniques, such as Exposure, White balance, Contrast and Cropping

Digital SLRs and point-and-shoot cameras are welcome. However, it would be advantageous if the camera has the ability to manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you are not familiar with your camera, it would be advised to bring along your camera’s user manual.

Whilst it’s not essential, access to laptop with image processing software is highly recommended, so that you can practice the image processing techniques during the workshop. Suitable image processing software include Lightroom, Photoshop (with Adobe Camera Raw), iPhoto, Aperture and Google’s free application, Picasa.

During the photography course, a set-menu lunch will be provided by the team at MUMU Grill, headed by Chef Craig MacIndoe; not just as a midday meal but also to serve as subjects to practice techniques learned earlier in the day.

The menu for lunch on the day consists of:

Bread and Dips
Olive Selection
Jamon Serrano
Szechuan Fried Prawns with Pickled Chilli and Soy
Duck and Shitake Mushroom Empanadas
Organic Chicken with Maple Roasted Sweet Potato and Spinach
Sirloin Tagliatta with Duck Fat Potatoes and Greens
Cherry Tomato Salad
Dessert Platter

The Photography Essentials workshop is $90.00 per person, which includes the cost of the course and the lunch provided.

There is a minimum class size of 8 in order for the course to go ahead, with a maximum limit of 14.

I’m excited to be a part of this. What time are the workshops?

    • Simon September 21, 2011, 11:32 am

      Hi Anna!

The workshop time is listed in the post for 10:30 arrival for an 11am start. What that basically means is that the doors open 10:30 for you to settle in but you don’t need to be there until a little before 11am.

      Hope that answers your question.
